The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony in February next year
Nothing says ‘it’s the end of the night’ like a sizzling kebab and a bed of hot chips, but grabbing one of these delicacies is becoming a more common sit-down affair as the industry grows and evolves.
Fortunately, here in Greater Manchester we’re well served when it comes to kebab houses and restaurants – and now four businesses have been named as finalists in the British Kebab Awards for 2023. Turkish Delight, Döner Summer, Shefa Mehadrin and Seitan’s Kebab have all been shortlisted as finalists in the prestigious awards.
The awards – which recognise and champion the efforts of local kebab takeaways and restaurants across the nation – are now in their eleventh year, and span 18 categories ranging from Best Newcomer to Best Kebab Van, as well as eight awards for the best kebabs restaurants across different regions the UK. Winners of each category will be crowned during a ceremony at Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge Hotel, on February 28.
A host of celebrities, prominent politicians, journalists and the nation’s hard-working restaurant workers will all be in attendance for the glittering ceremony. Past attendees of the awards include politicians such as Sadiq Khan, Angela Rayner, Brandon Lewis, Ed Davey, and Jeremy Corbyn.
While no Greater Manchester eatery was named in the Best Kebab Restaurant regionally or Best Takeaway Regionally, Döner Summer – which has outlets in Leeds, York, Sheffield and Manchester venue YES on Charles Street – and Seitan’s Kebab on Oxford Road will go head-to-head in the Best Vegan Kebab category. Meanwhile, Turkish Delight in Chorlton will go up against Burnley’s Turkish Best Kebab for Just Eat’s Best Delivery Award.
And finally, Shefa Mehadrin in Prestwich will battle it out with five London eateries for the Best Kosher Shawarma restaurant.
According to the British Kebab Awards, the kebab industry is worth over £2.8 billion to the UK economy and more than 1.5 million kebabs are sold every day. There are also over 20,000 kebab outlets in the UK selling around 2,500 tonnes of lamb and chicken doner a week.
Those who want to ensure their favourite neighbourhood kebab takeaways and restaurants can win their category can vote for them via the British Kebab Awards website.
